When a person is said to have a “cognitive disability,” it is generally understood that the
individual has limitations or challenges in performing one or more types of cerebral tasks. For
instance, individuals with a cognitive disability may experience difficulty in understanding or
processing information, solving problems, or responding to stimuli.
It also is generally recognized that individuals who fall into the category of having a
cognitive disability include those with intellectual disabilities, pervasive developmental
disabilities, acquired brain injuries, neurodegenerative disease, and learning disabilities.
